Abstract
A chinical study was performed on the influencing factors for survival of 95 very low birth weight infants who were delivered at Ewha Womans University Hosipital, during the 4 years from Jan 19989
to Dec 1992.
@ES The results obtained were as follows;
@EN The incidence of very low birth weight infants were 11% of total live birth and survival rate was 44.2%. There was no difference in difference in distribution by sex but survival rate was higher in female than male. The survival rate was
higher
proportional to birth weight and gestational age. The distribution of very low birth weight infants were higher in multiparity than primiparity but survival rate was not different in two group.
The survival rate was higher in very low birth weight infants delivered by D-section delivery than by vaginal delivery. The survival rate was significantly higher in very low birth weight infants with Apgar score 7 more at five minutes. The
frequency of
etiologic factors of VLBWI were premature rupture of membrane, multiple pregnancy,preeclampsia or eclampsia and incomplete internal os of cervix in that order The highest survival rate was preeclampsia and eclampsia. The survival rate was not
significantly different in either the PROM and noon-PROM groups. The incidence of respoiratory distress syndrome was less frequent in glucocorticoid treated gorup from 28 to 34 weeks. The frequency of cause of death was prematurity, respiratory
distress
syndrome, unknown and congenital anomalies in that order.
